Why You Should Partner with a Certified Financial Planner™

CFP Certified Financial Planner LogoThe CFP® certification is the gold standard of the financial planning industry. Many advisors call themselves “financial planners” today, but without certification from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. there is no way to gauge their level of expertise.

Earning the CFP® designation requires an advisor to pass four rigorous tests in the areas of:

  • Education. A CFP® must have a bachelor’s degree and complete college-level courses in personal financial planning.
  • Examination. A CFP® must pass the CFP® Certification Examination, which tests their ability to apply the principles of financial planning to real-life situations.
  • Experience. A CFP® must have three years of professional experience in financial planning as well as two years of apprenticeship before being certified.
  • Ethics. A CFP® must pledge to adhere to the CFP Board’s Standards of Professional Conduct and acknowledge the Board’s right to impose disciplinary measures on those who violate the standards.

In addition, CFP®s must renew their certification every two years, a procedure that requires 30 hours of continuing education each cycle.

The CFP® Edge

When you partner with a CFP® you can be confident that he or she has the depth of knowledge and experience needed to create an effective financial plan and manage your investments. CFP®s have demonstrated proficiency in the areas of:

More importantly, CFP®s are trained to develop wealth management and investment strategies based on your individual goals and best long-term interests. They understand the importance of minimizing investment risk while maximizing long-term returns.

CFP®s also understand the importance of a long-term relationship. Significant events such as inheritance, marriage or illness affect your financial plans just as clearly as an economic downturn, so it’s vital to review your overall financial plan on a regular basis.

The Fee-Only, Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) Model

At Berkson Asset Management, we conduct planning on a “fee-only” basis, which allows us to offer you objective advice as an independent advisory firm. Our fees are based on the amount of your assets we manage. As fee-only Certified Financial PlannersTM, we do not earn commissions on financial products. That allows us to focus on finding the investments most suited to your individual needs.

Our commitment to providing you with the highest level of personal service led us to become a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) as well. We are registered with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission as an RIA, which means we act as your fiduciary, always placing your needs first.

Our goal is to provide you with the most objective, effective and comprehensive financial planning services. We believe the best way to reach that goal is to earn the industry’s highest certification as CFP®s, to adopt the industry’s most ethical structure as an RIA, and to earn our keep on a fee-only basis.
